As gearbox manufacturers continue to challenge lubricant suppliers to meet higher operating parameters, polyalkylene glycol (PAG) lubricants from American Chemical Technologies, Inc. (ACT) have demonstrated they are up to the task. Gear fluids from PAG basestocks have excellent load-carrying capabilities. In applications where mineral-based gear compounds are pushed beyond their limits by operating conditions, PAGs outperform these conventional lubricants and provide real value. In a cast iron pipe mill where planetary gears with small reservoirs must operate at extreme temperatures, conversion to PAG-based gear fluids several years ago has significantly increased fluid service life. Today, intervals between fluid change outs are 10 times greater than before conversion to the PAG-based fluids.

Extreme Pressure (EP) additive packages used in gear fluids are typically comprised of active sulfur and phosphorus. Active sulfur is incompatible with yellow metals (used in worms gears for example), and can cause premature wear and failure in the mating surfaces. To address the problem, ACT has formulated its 9 series lubricants incorporating a yellow-metal friendly EP package specifically suited for these applications.
