PTG Collaborates with Sandvik on Deep Hole Machining Center

March 19, 2014
PTG Heavy Industries, the U.K.-based specialist in deep hole machining technologies, has been responsible for upgrading, installing and commissioning the deep hole drilling machine that will be used at Sandvik Coromant’s newly relocated Global Application Center for Deep Hole Machining at Halesowen in the West Midlands. Capable of internal profiling and chamber boring, the machine has a capacity of 600 mm x 2,500 mm (part diameter by length) and is able to drill, from solid, holes from 10 mm to 150 mm in diameter, and counterbore to a maximum diameter of 300 mm. It will be used to assist in customer projects and technical support, product development, application development and product and application training. To aid the development of robust and reliable processes, the machine has been equipped with a number of sensors for data collection. These will be used to log critical information such as spindle torque load, coolant volume, coolant pressure, thrust and vibration – key factors in reaching decisions about process parameters and tooling. “We are delighted to have been involved in such an exciting and important project with Sandvik Coromant,” comments PTG Heavy Industries’ Sales Manager, Christopher Cheetham PTG Heavy Industries, the U.K.-based specialist in deep hole machining technologies, has been responsible for upgrading, installing and commissioning the deep hole drilling machine that will be used at Sandvik Coromant’s newly relocated Global Application Center for Deep Hole Machining at Halesowen in the West Midlands. “We were responsible for refurbishing the model in question when it was purchased by Sandvik Coromant for their original Global Application Center in Cirencester, several years ago,” he continues. “It was, therefore, especially rewarding to have been recognised for our capabilities once again by such a leading name in deep hole machining processes, for customers across sectors as wide ranging as power generation, energy and aerospace. The relocated global facility will provide an important range of capabilities for research institutions, universities and machine tool manufacturers that wish to take part in materials cutting trials and component development.” PTG Heavy Industries has worked with Sandvik Coromant for more than fifteen years to provide comprehensive machine tool and cutting tool solutions for a wide range of global industrial sectors. Tailored to each customer’s most precise objectives, the high performance technologies that have resulted from the collaboration deliver process security, the highest levels of productivity and uncompromising levels of precision.
