Combined Process Machine Completes Cylindrical Gears
The Agilus 180TH multi-functional machine from Gleason performs turning, drilling, milling, hobbing and chamfering/deburring operations in a single setup for all shaft- and disc-type cylindrical gears up to 180 mm in diameter with shaft lengths up to 500 mm.
The Agilus 180TH reduces the number of machines, setups and overall through-put times to completely process a gear in comparison to typical cylindrical gear production that requires hobbing. User benefits include more flexibility, higher machine availability and eliminating time-consuming part changeover.
The Agilus features a high-speed tool turret to locate fixed or driven tools for the complete range of turning, drilling and milling operations. Active grippers on the turret provide workpiece loading and unloading functions. Hobbing is enabled by a Gleason hob head. Chamfering and deburring operations are an optional turret feature. A CNC-controlled tailstock allows Agilus to clamp a broad range of workpiece types and sizes while providing rigidity during machining to maximize cutting feed rates.
Gleason's Quick-Flex workholding concept combines with a quick-clamp option for cutting tool change reduces non-productive setup time. The Agilus integrates into existing manufacturing environments because of its compact, single-machine footprint in addition to a universal automation interface, which connects to sliding chain belts, chain-type conveyors, workpiece stack cells and other automation and storage systems.
Agilus operates at the same level in either wet or dry cutting conditions. For machining thin shafts, workpiece clamping is performed under tensile load to produce high hobbing quality and productivity.
