Sandvik Coromant Adds Deep-Hole Drills to CoroDrill Dura 462 Line
Sandvik Coromant has added deep-hole solid carbide drills, from 12xD to 30xD, to its CoroDrill Dura 462 family. With this range, the family now covers micro, short-hole and deep-hole drilling across a range of materials. The drills are aimed at general engineering, automotive, aerospace, oil and gas, and pump and valve work.
The new drills use grade X2BM, which has a micro-grain carbide substrate and Zertivo 2.0 PVD coating. Deep-hole drilling makes positional accuracy, thrust force and chip evacuation harder to control. To address this, the geometry has a revised flute design, offset double margins, double gashes, blended root radii and a 135-degree point angle. The company says these features improve stability, reduce cutting forces and improve hole quality and tool life.
Sandvik Coromant reports that in customer field trials against competitor drills, the deep-hole drill averaged 45 percent longer tool life and 25 percent higher productivity.
For holes deeper than 15xD, Sandvik Coromant recommends drilling the pilot hole with a 3xD or 5xD CoroDrill Dura 462 short-hole drill of matching diameter, instead of using a dedicated pilot drill. The drills can also be reconditioned several times without losing their original cutting diameter.
"What we hear clearly from customers is that process security remains one of their top priorities," said James Thorpe, global product manager at Sandvik Coromant. “At the same time, many manufacturers aren't looking for an optimized tool for a single application. They want one solution that delivers reliable results across a wide range of materials and conditions.”
