Cortec EcoShield 386 Water Based Coating Achieves 1,000 Hours of Salt Spray Testing

July 26, 2016

Through the Nano VpCI coatings chemistry of Cortec Laboratories, the first water based coating has been created to withstand a minimum 1,000 hours of intense salt spray at super thin coverage rates (1 mil dry film thickness [DFT])!

EcoShield 386 Water Based Coating Powered by Nano VpCI is a breakthrough in the water based corrosion inhibitor coatings market. Now it is possible to protect metal structures in extremely harsh outdoor conditions with just a very thin high gloss clear coat of EcoShield 386 that allows visual inspection of the substrate. The application possibilities around the world are countless, ranging from industrial, to energy, to oil and gas to automotive uses. It is an outstanding choice where long term corrosion protection with UV defense is required, especially in harsh marine conditions exposed to extreme salt spray.

The unique acrylic based formula of EcoShield 386 Water Based Coating Powered by Nano VpCI uses a complex mixture of nano sized non-toxic organic inhibitors which provide protection superior to traditional corrosion inhibiting coatings. Performance has exceeded even the expectations of Cortec's own ISO 17025 Accredited Lab, where it achieved reproducible corrosion protection results on carbon steel panels according to the ASTM B117 Standard (with minimal creepage from the scribe). As the test proceeded, Cortec's lab was amazed to see the carbon steel panels protected from the corrosive effects of continuous salt spray for days on end with only a 1 mil DFT coating of EcoShield 386 applied to the metal. This level of performance is unheard of in the water based corrosion inhibitor coatings market, meaning users of EcoShield 386 can now achieve better protection for their metal with a water based coating.

Other features include fast drying, ease of us, low VOC - less than 0.6 pounds per gallon (68 g/l), multiple application methods, including spray, dip, or brushing, resistance to sagging or running, a non-flammable protective barrier, UV resistance that discourages cracking or chipping under extended sunlight exposure and a cold weather (winterized) version available. EcoShield 386 Water Based Coating Powered by Nano VpCl can be tinted to match custom colors and used as a DTM coating, or as a topcoat over the appropriate primer. It's designed to be safer to use, easier to clean up and more environmentally friendly than hazardous solvent based coatings.

EcoShield 386 Water Based Coating Powered by Nano VpCI is just one example of how Cortec is changing the face of the global corrosion inhibitor market. With this revolutionary water based coating, Cortec is leading the way to safer, more effective corrosion protection for the entire world!

Cortec's EcoShield 386 Water Based Coating Powered by Nano VpCI conforms to the following: ASTM B-117 Salt Spray, ASTM D-1748 Humidity,        ASTM D-3359 Adhesion, ASTM D-522 Flexibility, ASTM D-532 Gloss, ASTM D-3960 VOC, ASTM D-3363 Pencil Hardness, ASTM D-3363 Pencil Hardness and NACE RP0487-2000 - Selection of Rust Preventives.
