Entry-level engineers are at a disadvantage when selecting power transmission components due to their lack of education and experience. While attending an ABET-accredited engineering school, most students are only exposed to gearing during a single lecture in a course titled Mechatronic Design, which is just one course over their entire educational journey. If they participate in a Senior Project in Mechanical Engineering, they might need to draw on the basics covered in that single lecture. Beyond these two opportunities, recent graduates have next to zero knowledge of gearing.
Of the 137 respondents to our annual gear-industry survey, the message was clear: tariffs are the defining challenge of 2026. But the frustration runs deeper than the duties themselves. Manufacturers can absorb cost increases; they can’t absorb chaos. When rules shift weekly and exemptions evaporate overnight, planning becomes guesswork. One respondent captured the exhaustion: “In 2025, they were all over the place, without warning, up and down. Terribly disorganized.” Yet within this turbulence, distinct currents run strong. Defense and aerospace work has surged. Oil and gas, buoyed by loosened regulations, is “very active” according to multiple respondents, with mobile power units and gas compression driving demand. Overhaul and repair business is booming—when new equipment becomes expensive or hard to source, companies keep existing machines running longer, and that means gears.
PEER Chain & Sprockets has formed a Growth Committee to accelerate the company’s expansion strategy and build on strong customer and distributor demand driven by what many describe as the “PEER Experience.”
Forest City Gear, a manufacturer of fine- and medium-pitch custom gears, announced that Kika Young, president and shareholder, has joined the Greater Rockford Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) board of directors. In addition to her board role, Young will contribute her expertise as a member of both the GRCC’s Talent Committee and the Rockford Area Aerospace Network (RAAN).

MPT Expo 2025 welcomed 4,425 industry professionals including executives, engineers, plant managers, supply chain experts, military personnel and more.
Operating for long hours, under extreme loads, in high temperatures and dusty environments, ongoing wear is a significant challenge for open gears. This can lead to unplanned downtime and reduced equipment life—creating a barrier to effective operations. Leading mining and cement companies use advanced grease technology and technical inspections to help prevent open gear failure, optimize service life and ensure the smooth running of their operations.
From its origins as a small machine shop to becoming a global leader in precision engineering, Gleason Corporation has continuously redefined the industry. This journey, marked by pioneering inventions and strategic expansions, has left an indelible mark on sectors ranging from automotive and aerospace to robotics and renewable energy.
The team at David Brown Santasalo (DBS Canada) recently carried out the successful delivery of a time-sensitive and complex service project for a valued, long-standing customer in the mining industry. This project supported operations at a gold mine located in one of the most remote regions of northern Canada, just below the Arctic Circle.
Quickparts has strengthened its commitment to “Limitless Manufacturing” with completion of a significant $2.5 million expansion in new equipment and facility enhancements at its Seattle headquarters. The upgrades formally establish this site as an Aerospace & Defense Center of Excellence, strengthening the company’s longstanding expertise in high fidelity casting patterns and advanced stereolithography (SLA). Simultaneously, Quickparts is officially launching its Quick Mold solution – announced last month in EMEA - across North America, bringing production-quality molded parts to market in as little as five days.

Many of our favorite movie characters carry an alter ego: Clark Kent and Superman, Jekyll and Hyde, Bruce Wayne and Batman…you get my point. Neither nefarious nor secret, the Motion + Power Manufacturers Alliance (MPMA) carries a similar twin. You may be involved in one of our 15 technical committees and the sub-working groups that are involved in one of the 14 open projects (found at agma.org/committees/standards-projects/ or americanbearings.org/industry-standards/), but both AGMA and ABMA divisions are busy helping to develop international standards on the gear and bearing technical committees within the International Standards Organization (ISO). Our ISO “alter ego.”
