In this project, a practical measurement comparison of conventional tactile and optical systems was done. The goal was to investigate if and how good the measurement results of classic characteristics and waviness characteristics of the different physical measurement principles are comparable. In addition, it was determined whether the use of optical fringe projection measurement systems is suitable for gear metrology.
Across sectors, the same operational truth is becoming harder to ignore: downtime has a direct impact on revenue. It ripples into supply chains, disrupts mission readiness, compromises service levels and, in some environments, creates genuine safety risk.
In high-demand industrial environments like plastic recycling and extrusion, system efficiency, thermal management, and drive reliability are critical to operational success. FAE SRL, specialists in electrical panel design for OEMs in the plastics sector across Italy and Switzerland, needed a drive solution that could meet the rigorous demands of continuous operation, high power density, and seamless integration with modern control architectures.

ONYX Insight launched Ecoblade, a new condition monitoring system (CMS) providing continuous visibility and analysis of blade behavior and health, unlocking millions in savings for wind farm owners and operators worldwide in April.
An excerpt from Gear Technology Solutions by Dr. Hermann J. Stadtfeld exploring the mathematics behind conjugate bevel and hypoid gears—from the fundamental laws of gearing and the conditions for perfect conjugacy to why real-world power transmissions require deliberate crowning rather than theoretically exact conjugate designs.
Gear inspection and noise analysis are essential for ensuring quality and efficiency in modern gear manufacturing. Increasingly stringent requirements on dimensional tolerances—often in the micron range—and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) performance necessitate advanced measurement and evaluation methods.

Igus has announced that it is the first supplier to qualify halogen-free chainflex TPE cables for IPA dry cleanroom classes 4 and 5 through the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA). This certification ensures customers in highly automated battery production receive energy supply solutions with a guaranteed service life of up to four years.
Mechanical engineering develops the scientific and mathematical principles behind physical machines, but you can’t help feeling a little real-world magic taking place in the manufacture of components needed for large, heavy industrial applications. Cement production, for example, relies on gigantic equipment to grind raw materials using rotary kilns, ball mills, vertical mills and crushers.
Entry-level engineers are at a disadvantage when selecting power transmission components due to their lack of education and experience. While attending an ABET-accredited engineering school, most students are only exposed to gearing during a single lecture in a course titled Mechatronic Design, which is just one course over their entire educational journey. If they participate in a Senior Project in Mechanical Engineering, they might need to draw on the basics covered in that single lecture. Beyond these two opportunities, recent graduates have next to zero knowledge of gearing.
Of the 137 respondents to our annual gear-industry survey, the message was clear: tariffs are the defining challenge of 2026. But the frustration runs deeper than the duties themselves. Manufacturers can absorb cost increases; they can’t absorb chaos. When rules shift weekly and exemptions evaporate overnight, planning becomes guesswork. One respondent captured the exhaustion: “In 2025, they were all over the place, without warning, up and down. Terribly disorganized.” Yet within this turbulence, distinct currents run strong. Defense and aerospace work has surged. Oil and gas, buoyed by loosened regulations, is “very active” according to multiple respondents, with mobile power units and gas compression driving demand. Overhaul and repair business is booming—when new equipment becomes expensive or hard to source, companies keep existing machines running longer, and that means gears.
PEER Chain & Sprockets has formed a Growth Committee to accelerate the company’s expansion strategy and build on strong customer and distributor demand driven by what many describe as the “PEER Experience.”
